NIO Inc – ADR (NYSE:NIO) shares are trading flat during Wednesday’s pre-market session as traders continue to weigh strong May delivery momentum and fresh SUV launches that have kept the recent rebound narrative intact. Here’s what investors need to know.

What Is Driving NIO’s Recent Delivery Surge?

NIO's latest update showed May deliveries of 37,705 vehicles, up 62.3% from a year earlier, helping extend the stock's recent run after Monday's rally. The mix included 20,013 NIO-branded vehicles, 12,029 ONVO units, and 5,663 FIREFLY models, with year-to-date deliveries at 150,526 vehicles (up 68.7%).

NIO's product momentum has been a key add-on catalyst, with the ONVO L80 introduced May 15 and deliveries starting May 16, while the ES9 deliveries began May 28 after its May 27 unveiling. The company has also pointed to premium-segment traction, saying the All-New ES8 ranked No. 1 in sales among vehicles priced above 400,000 yuan for five straight months.

NIO Stock: Key Technical Levels To Watch

At $5.93, NIO is trading 1.2% above its 20-day SMA ($5.84) and 0.9% above its 200-day SMA ($5.86), which keeps the longer-term trend constructive as long as it can hold those levels on pullbacks. The near-term picture is still a bit choppy, with the stock 2.5% below its 50-day SMA ($6.06) even while it sits 7.1% above the 100-day SMA ($5.52).

Momentum looks more "range-bound than breakout" right now, with RSI at 53.20 (neutral), suggesting buying pressure isn't stretched and the stock may need another catalyst to push through overhead supply. RSI is a quick gauge of whether a move is getting overheated; here it's basically saying the tape is balanced rather than extended.

The bigger trend marker is the golden cross in April (50-day SMA moving above the 200-day SMA), which often keeps dip-buyers engaged if price stays above the longer averages. That said, the 20-day SMA still sitting below the 50-day SMA is consistent with consolidation after the April swing high and the May swing low.

What Is NIO And How Does It Operate?

NIO is a leading electric vehicle maker focused on the premium segment in China, designing and selling smart EV sedans and SUVs while also leaning on differentiators like battery swapping and advanced driver-assist tech. It launched its first model, the ES8 seven-seater electric SUV, in late 2017 and began deliveries in 2018.

In 2025, it sold around 326,000 EVs, about 2% of China's passenger new energy vehicle market, so monthly delivery trends can quickly change sentiment on demand and scale. That's why the May delivery jump and the ramp of newer models under the NIO, ONVO, and FIREFLY brands are showing up directly in the stock's momentum.
