Airbnb Inc. (NASDAQ:ABNB) CEO Brian Chesky said on Thursday his X account was hacked earlier this week, resulting in posts promoting real-world asset tokenization.
The Hack Story
A new X post from Chesky’s account read, “To the person who hacked my account earlier this week: thanks for all the new crypto followers. To my new crypto followers: I’m going to be a very disappointing follow.”
It all started with an X thread on his account about real-world asset tokenization, which read, ” I’ve been quiely keeping an eye on real-world asset tokenization for a while now.”
The post then mentions that much of it is “noise,” but underneath the noise, “something real” is happening.
Before this, Chesky never posted about tokenization on X. In fact, there aren’t many posts about cryptocurrency either.
Fortune also reported on the hack. Benzinga contacted Airbnb to verify whether Chesky’s account is secure and whether he posted the latest update.
Beware Of Fraudsters
It’s not uncommon for hackers to target high-profile people to promote cryptocurrency projects.
Hackers hijacked the official SpaceXAI and Starlink X accounts and used them to aggressively promote a memecoin called SCATMAN, then executed a rug pull after attracting investors to the token.
Similarly, veteran investor Ross Gerber’s X account was compromised last year to promote a coin linked to automotive giant Tesla.
Price Action: Airbnb shares were down 0.26% in pre-market trading after closing 0.39% lower at $147.80 during Thursday’s regular trading session.
The stock shows strong short-, medium- and long-term price momentum, according to Benzinga’s Edge Stock Rankings.
