Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on Sunday that he’d visit New York City despite stiff opposition from Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Netanyahu’s ‘Answer’ to Mamdani
The controversy has intensified ahead of Netanyahu’s trip to the U.S. He is due to meet President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday—their first in-person talks since the Iran war began.
Netanyahu declared in a Fox interview that he will visit New York City later in the year to address the United Nations General Assembly, while accusing Mamdani of “fomenting hate” through efforts to enforce the warrant issued against him.
“My answer to Mamdani: I will come to New York to fight for the truth of the Jewish people,” he added.
Mamdani initially declared that New York City would enforce an arrest warrant for Netanyahu over the Gaza war, but later walked back on the threat, citing a lack of “independent legal authority.” He urged the Trump administration to enforce the warrant.
Trump has backed Netanyahu and declared that the Israeli leader would not be arrested "in any way, shape, or form" during his U.S. visit.
What Prediction Market Says
Polygon (CRYPTO: POL)-based Polymarket assigned only a 6% chance of Netanyahu’s arrest by law enforcement authorities in any jurisdiction by Dec. 31. The probability of an arrest by Sept. 30 was priced even lower, at just 3%.
The Israeli leader has an arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza.
Netanyahu’s office has referred to the ICC as "a kangaroo court that has no jurisdiction over Americans or Israelis."
