Micron Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:MU) stock extended its decline in Tuesday’s premarket session after closing 2.25% lower on Monday, as investors continued to pull back from artificial intelligence-linked memory stocks amid a broader risk-off move in technology.
The weakness comes after SK hynix Inc. (NASDAQ:SKHY) plunged 7.47% in the previous session, extending a sharp sector-wide selloff that has swept through AI memory names. Nasdaq futures were down 0.76% early Tuesday, while S&P 500 futures slipped 0.08%.
AI Memory Trade Faces A Reality Check
Micron remains one of the biggest beneficiaries of the AI memory boom, but recent price action suggests investors are reassessing how long strong high-bandwidth memory (HBM) demand, pricing power and hyperscaler spending can sustain the sector’s rally.
The selloff accelerated after SK hynix lost nearly 47% from its June peak, erasing hundreds of billions in market value and raising concerns that AI-linked memory stocks had become overcrowded. The weakness has spread across the sector, weighing on companies including Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (OTC:SSNLF), Kioxia and China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT).
Investor sentiment also deteriorated after reports of China’s progress in deep ultraviolet lithography machines raised concerns about future memory-chip supply and increased competition.
Deutsche Bank strategist Jim Reid told the Financial Times that renewed worries over AI infrastructure spending and lower-cost Chinese competition triggered another wave of selling in global semiconductor stocks.
Technical Analysis
Micron remains in a long-term uptrend despite the recent correction. The stock is trading 19.4% above its 100-day simple moving average (SMA) and 68.8% above its 200-day SMA, indicating the broader trend remains positive.
However, near-term momentum has weakened. Shares are 11.5% below the 20-day SMA and 10.8% below the 50-day SMA, suggesting the stock is undergoing a healthy pullback after reaching a 52-week high in June.
The relative strength index (RSI) stands at 45.31, placing the stock in neutral territory. The reading suggests buying pressure has cooled without signaling oversold conditions.
The overall trend structure remains constructive, with the 20-day SMA above the 50-day SMA and the 50-day SMA above the 200-day SMA, a classic bullish alignment.
A key support level to watch is $804, where buyers previously stepped in.
