Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) added roughly $450 billion of market value on Thursday, the largest one-day market-cap gain any company has ever posted.

Shares closed up 15.51%, lifting market capitalization to $3.35 trillion and eclipsing the previous record set by Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA), which added $441 billion on April 9, 2025.

It was Microsoft’s biggest single-day percentage move since October 2008.

Through Thursday’s close the stock was up 18.18% for the week, its strongest weekly advance since 2000, based on weekly data from TradingView.

Microsoft has produced a single-session gain of this size only four times since it went public in 1986.

If your instinct is to buy now, history has a warning.

What Actually Changed in MSFT

The trigger was a fourth-quarter report that dismantled the year’s central worry about artificial intelligence spending.

Revenue reached $90 billion, up 18% and ahead of the $87.6 billion consensus.

Azure grew 43%, its fastest pace since early 2022, and crossed $100 billion in revenue for a full fiscal year for the first time. Commercial remaining performance obligations rose 84% to $678 billion.

Capital expenditures including finance leases landed at $41 billion for the quarter, below the roughly $42 billion investors had braced for.

Management guided to about $50 billion for the fiscal first quarter of 2027 and $175 billion for calendar 2026, describing the spending plan as unchanged.

The Setup Nobody Wants to Remember

Screening every session since Microsoft’s 1986 listing produces five days with a gain of 15% or more. Thursday was the fifth.

The forward record of the first four is not encouraging.

They all happened inside a crash.

Two came days after Black Monday, in October 1987. One came in the middle of the dot-com unwind, in October 2000. One came during the worst week of the global financial crisis, in October 2008.

Not one occurred in a rising market. A 15% up day in Microsoft has never been a bull market event.

Which is where the current setup stops being incidental.

Microsoft entered the week down roughly 30% from its October 2025 high of $555.45 and off 19% year-to-date, while the S&P 500 was up about 7%.

It hit a 52-week low of $349.20 on June 25. Even after the record session, the stock remains about 19% below its 52-week high and still negative for 2026.

One month later the stock was lower three times out of four, with a median loss of 10.98%.

Twelve months later both the average and median returns remained negative.

On no horizon did the signal produce a win rate above 50%.
