Venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya said artificial intelligence (AI) may have entered a self-improvement cycle that could accelerate AI capabilities rapidly, predicting breakthroughs and falling model costs over the next 18 months.

Chamath Sees AI Feedback Loop

On Sunday, Palihapitiya, founder and CEO of Social Capital, said the AI industry may have entered a cycle of recursive self-improvement, where advanced systems help create even more powerful AI models.

In a post on X, he described the "AI singularity" as a cycle where "humans build an AGI," the system "becomes good at AI research," and then "designs a smarter AI," creating a repeating cycle of increasingly capable systems.

The AI singularity refers to a hypothetical future point when AI surpasses human intelligence and becomes capable of improving itself, potentially leading to rapid advances in AI capabilities.

Palihapitiya said, "Looking at the results and capabilities from the various labs over the past few weeks, I would say we are firmly in this loop now."

He added, "The next 18 months will be wild."

He further said "recursive self-improvement will dramatically increase capability very quickly from here" and predicted that "marginal costs of all models will go to ~$0."

Elon Musk Says AI Singularity Has Arrived

Earlier, Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk said humanity has already entered the AI singularity era.

He wrote on social media, "We have entered the Singularity."

Hours later, Musk added, "2026 is the year of the Singularity."

His comments came after engineers highlighted how advanced AI tools are accelerating software development, allowing years of work to be completed in weeks and transforming how technology is built.

Industry Pushes Toward Self-Improving AI

Anthropic and Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:META) highlighted growing AI adoption across development and consumer platforms.

Anthropic said it was increasingly using AI systems to assist with model development, exploring the possibility of "recursive self-improvement" while noting the technology had not reached that stage yet.

Meanwhile, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said AI-generated content would become a major part of Instagram’s future, with the company’s Muse Image and Muse Video models creating more personalized recommendations for users.
