Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:PLTR) heads into its second-quarter earnings release after Monday’s close in one of the tightest technical setups of the year.

Shares have compressed into a symmetrical triangle, with resistance and support converging near the pattern’s apex around the current $123 level.

What a Symmetrical Triangle Signals

A symmetrical triangle is a chart pattern defined by two converging trendlines — a descending upper line connecting lower highs and an ascending lower line connecting higher lows — that signal a period of consolidation and indecision before a breakout.

Palantir stock chart showing showing converging trendlines.

Each swing inside the pattern typically shrinks as buyers and sellers reach a temporary standoff, and volume tends to contract through the formation before expanding sharply once price escapes the range.

Breakouts usually resolve between 50% and 75% of the distance to the apex rather than at the very tip, and a valid move needs a daily close beyond the trendline, not just an intraday poke through it. Traders typically project a price target by measuring the triangle’s height at its widest point and adding or subtracting that distance from the breakout level.

One added wrinkle: symmetrical triangles function as continuation patterns roughly 55% to 60% of the time, meaning price tends to resolve in the direction of the trend that preceded the pattern.

Palantir entered this triangle after a roughly 40% slide from its all-time high, so the statistical lean favors a downside break, though earnings introduce a binary catalyst that can override the odds entirely.

Levels That Matter

A close above roughly $131.45 breaks the descending trendline and opens a path toward $139.09, then $145.51 and $151.17. A breakdown below $120.41 support flips the script, targeting $114.66 and then $106.60.

Momentum has already turned cautious. Palantir closed at $123.53 on July 28, below its 20-day, 50-day and 200-day exponential moving averages, with the 50-day EMA near $131.26 and the 200-day EMA near $144.26 acting as overhead resistance.

Fundamentals Still Carry Weight

Palantir has beaten earnings estimates for eight straight quarters, and consensus calls for Q2 revenue of $1.8 billion and adjusted EPS of 35 cents, according to Benzinga Pro data.

Investors will watch U.S. commercial revenue growth closely, along with AIP deployment momentum and any updates on government contracts.

Analyst targets remain wide of the current price. Wedbush holds a $230 price target, and the average analyst target sits at $177, implying 39.5% upside if the AI and defense narrative reasserts itself.

The gap between technical fragility and bullish fundamental narratives makes Palantir’s Q2 print a genuine coin flip between a trend-confirming breakdown and a fundamentals-driven breakout.

PLTR Stock Price Activity: Palantir stock was up 3.03% at $126.78 during premarket trading Monday, according to data from Benzinga Pro.
