The iShares Silver Trust (NYSE:SLV) is trading higher Wednesday afternoon, lifted by broad gains across precious metals. Here’s what’s driving the move.
- iShares Silver Trust stock is charging ahead with explosive momentum. What’s driving SLV stock higher?
Silver Prices Surge on Hormuz Optimism and Shifting Fed Math
Silver prices are up more than 4%, trading above $62 an ounce. Wednesday’s surge is likely being catalyzed by statements from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who indicated a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be reached this week. This geopolitical easing has triggered a sharp drop in oil prices, cooling inflationary pressures.
When inflation fears cool down, interest rates tend to fall and the U.S. dollar gets weaker. Since silver doesn’t pay out regular interest like a bond or a savings account does, it becomes more attractive to investors when interest rates drop. As those alternative payouts shrink, more people move their money into the silver market.
Silver Supply Deficit Fueled by Record Solar and Industrial Demand
Additionally, the iShares Silver Trust is up some 63% over the trailing year amid underlying support from a widening structural supply deficit. Record-breaking industrial demand, particularly from the photovoltaic (solar panel) manufacturing and electronics sectors, continues to deplete physical inventories.
