Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCX) and Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk‘s Terafab semiconductor manufacturing facility will become the world’s largest building by floor area once completed.
Five Times Larger Than Current Record-Holder
According to a Fortune report on Monday, Tesla and SpaceX will be breaking ground on the semiconductor facility in Grimes County, Texas, which will dwarf the world’s current largest building.
The New Century Global Center in Chengdu, China, is at 18.9 million square feet and holds the record for the largest building in the world, according to the World Atlas data cited in the report. In contrast, the Terafab is planned to span across 100 million square feet, which is more than five times larger.
According to the Terafab website, Musk aims to consolidate logic, memory, packaging, and testing under a single facility to help mitigate supply chain woes.
The facility is designed to produce more than 1 terawatt of AI compute hardware annually, churning out custom chips for Tesla’s Cybercab fleet, Optimus humanoid robots, and SpaceX’s space infrastructure.
Tesla’s Terafab Will Prioritize Space
Musk, in a social media post, confirmed that the facility would cater to both Tesla and SpaceX. He said that while his guess was approximate, the billionaire said that Terafab’s “AI compute output would be ~25% for Tesla Optimus and ~75% for AI spacecraft.”
During SpaceX’s first earnings call since going public, Musk said that the company would report $1 trillion in revenue by 2030. Musk also said that Starlink will be in every car, as it was the only way to provide “super high bandwidth” to billions of vehicles.
