On Tuesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) threw his support behind New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s (D) push to strengthen protections for Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) delivery workers.
Sanders Backs Mamdani’s Amazon Delivery Worker Bill
In a post on X, Sanders said that Amazon made more than $92 billion in the first half of the year while using "legal loopholes" to deny workers their constitutional right to unionize.
He praised Mamdani for backing legislation to hold Amazon accountable and protect its delivery drivers.
Mamdani endorsed the Delivery Protection Act on Monday. Introduced by New York City Council Member Tiffany Caban, the bill would increase oversight of facilities handling last-mile deliveries and require operators to obtain licenses from the city’s Department of Consumer and Worker Protection.
The proposal also takes aim at Amazon’s use of Delivery Service Partners, or DSPs — independent businesses that employ drivers who deliver Amazon packages.
Amazon Warns NYC Bill Could Put 5,000 Jobs At Risk
Amazon has pushed back against the proposal, saying it could hurt local small businesses and threaten more than 5,000 jobs.
The company said the legislation could force it to consider moving delivery operations outside New York City, potentially resulting in slower and more expensive deliveries for customers.
Amazon said it remains committed to its New York employees and local delivery partners and urged City Council members to visit its delivery stations before voting.
Price Action: Amazon closed at $272.27 on Tuesday, down 2.09%. The shares were at $272.26 in after-hours trading, according to Benzinga Pro.
Benzinga Edge ranks Amazon in the 91st percentile for Growth, with the stock showing a positive price trend across the short, medium and long term.
