Red Cat Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:RCAT) stock rose Friday after President Donald Trump imposed new tariffs on imported drones and components, a move that could strengthen the competitive position of U.S. manufacturers.
The tariffs matter for Red Cat because they could shift the competitive balance toward domestic drone makers as Washington prioritizes U.S. production and supply chains.
Trump signed a proclamation Thursday establishing tariffs on unmanned aircraft systems, or UAS, and their components. The policy could also benefit domestic drone makers such as Kratos Defense & Security Solutions Inc., AeroVironment Inc., Unusual Machines Inc. and Ondas Inc.
Tariffs Target Foreign Drone Competition
The proclamation imposes a 100% tariff on certain drones considered particularly sensitive for national security, including drones with a maximum takeoff weight of more than 25 kilograms and drones with thermal imaging capabilities. The tariff also covers docking stations and certain critical components for those drones.
Certain smaller drones that lack capabilities considered particularly sensitive for national security, as well as other drone components, will face a 25% tariff.
Imports from several U.S. allies will face lower rates. Drones and components from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland and Taiwan will face a 15% tariff, while drones from the United Kingdom will face a 10% tariff, provided substantially all hardware, software and technology originates within those countries and the United States.
The tariffs generally take effect 21 days after signing. Tariffs on drone components that are not considered particularly sensitive take effect after 180 days. The same 180-day timeline applies to products and components that the Defense Department approves for an exemption from the Federal Communications Commission’s Covered List within 20 days of signing.
The measures could provide a tailwind for U.S. drone manufacturers by raising the cost of competing foreign products. Red Cat develops drones for defense, government and security applications, putting the company directly within the domestic industry the administration is seeking to support.
White House Pushes Domestic Drone Manufacturing
The proclamation goes beyond tariffs. It also gives Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick authority to establish a program aimed at encouraging investment in domestic drone manufacturing.
The economic mandate follows an investigation by Lutnick. According to the White House, he concluded that the United States is “too reliant” on foreign drone supply chains and that foreign components “pose security and safety risks.”
“U.S. drone production needs to be expanded rapidly to ensure U.S. national and economic security,” the White House said.
The policy adds to Washington’s broader effort to reduce dependence on foreign-made technology in areas considered critical to national security.
