Benzinga readers and social media users were recently alerted that HVAC company Comfort Systems USA Inc (NYSE:FIX) is the best-performing S&P 500 stock over the last five years, even outperforming Nvidia and other tech giants.
One member of Congress aggressively bought shares of the company in 2020 but cashed out early, missing out on millions in profits.
Congressman Buys and Sells Comfort Systems Stock
There are currently only two members of Congress who own Comfort Systems stock, according to the Benzinga Government Trades page.
Things were slightly different back in 2020, with Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) also owning shares of the HVAC and plumbing company.
And not just buying once or twice, McCaul bought the stock 68 times in February and March 2020, according to data from Quiver Quantitative.
Those transactions total $68,000 to $1.02 million worth of Comfort Systems stock.
The congressman later sold shares of Comfort Systems stock on March 30, 2020, in two chunks, one for $50,000 to $100,000 and one for $15,000 to $50,000.
It is unknown whether those sales eliminated McCaul’s entire Comfort Systems stock holdings, or if he still owns some today, as the transactions don’t list "partial" or "full" as newer Congress trades do today.
What investors will come to find out is just how bad the timing of the sale was for McCaul, who sold $65,000 to $150,000 in FIX stock at the time.
McCaul’s sale was for between 1,819.2 and 4,198.2 shares, based on the trading volume and a high price of $35.73 per share on March 30, 2020.
Today, that stake would be worth $3,170,265.26 to $7,316,077.19. McCaul’s 2020 sale cost him millions of potential profits six years later.
McCaul is one of the most active stock traders in Congress. Data from Quiver Quantitative shows 29,367 stock trades made since 2013. The trades total more than $1.5 billion.
Current Comfort Systems Stock Owners
Comfort Systems stock was not only a top gainer over the last five years but also ranked in the top five for the 10-, 15-, and 20-year periods, according to a recent social media post.
Those strong gains over the last 20 years could be what two current members of Congress are hoping for, assuming they don’t sell too early like McCaul.
Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.) bought $2,000 to $30,000 in FIX stock on Dec. 4, 2025. Based on a high price of 1,006.60 that day, Donalds is up 73.1% over the last eight months.
Sen. Alan Armstrong (R-Okla.) bought $1,000 to $15,000 in FIX stock on March 27, 2026. Based on a high price of $1,390.90 that day, Armstrong is up 25.4% over the last five months.
