Snap Inc. (NYSE:SNAP) stock declined Wednesday amid heightened scrutiny of capital spending on its $2,195 Specs augmented reality glasses. The Nasdaq is down 0.02% while the S&P 500 has gained 0.09%.
Sector peer Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META) agreed Wednesday to settle a social media addiction lawsuit with California and 28 other states for approximately $18 billion, reported CNBC.
While Snap beat second-quarter estimates on Aug. 3, reporting an adjusted loss of 10 cents per share on $1.6 billion in revenue, investors remain cautious about hardware investments.
Heavy Spending On Augmented Reality
CEO Evan Spiegel noted that mass-market adoption of the $2,195 AI-powered Spectacles remains years away. “I think it will be towards the end of the decade before we see mass market consumer adoption,” Spiegel told analysts during the quarterly call. “Specs are designed for a future in which AI does more work on our behalf, and people spend less time operating screens,” Spiegel said.
Legal Action Targets App Design
Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday sued Snap on Tuesday, accusing the firm of utilizing features that keep children compulsively engaged.
“Once they have you signed up and logged in, you are officially in their clutches,” Sunday said. “From there, Snapchat essentially says good luck getting out.”
“The lawsuit also demands that Snapchat finally come clean about the addictiveness of their app and takes real action to protect young users,” Sunday said.
Snap rejected the legal allegations. “The allegations fundamentally misrepresent our platform and our approach to teen safety,” a spokesperson said in a statement shared with Fox News. “Snapchat was designed differently from the beginning: it opens to a camera, not a feed of content, and was built to encourage self-expression and authentic connection with friends.”
Technical Analysis
From a trend perspective, Snap is still trying to stabilize after a weak 12-month stretch (down 21.37%), and Wednesday’s pullback fits the pattern of sellers defending overhead levels. The stock is trading 7.3% below its 200-day SMA ($5.95), a common "line in the sand" that often caps rallies until price can reclaim it.
In the nearer term, the setup is more constructive: Snap is trading 4.2% above its 20-day SMA ($5.29) and 12.8% above its 50-day SMA ($4.89), and the 20-day SMA is above the 50-day SMA (a bullish crossover). But the longer-term picture stays mixed because the 50-day SMA remains below the 200-day SMA, which typically signals the broader trend hasn’t fully repaired.
