Novavax Inc. (NASDAQ:NVAX) shares are trading higher. Strength may be due to an increase in investor attention related to an unconfirmed rumor suggesting that Matrix-M has a favorable safety profile with mostly mild-to-moderate, self-limiting side effects.

The Matrix-M Speculation

Matrix-M is Novavax’s proprietary adjuvant, designed to strengthen and broaden immune response, and it already appears in globally approved vaccines including the R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine. Retail traders on platforms like StockTwits have been extrapolating the platform’s broader potential toward possible oncology applications, though no verified Novavax announcement has tied Matrix-M to a new deal or disclosed safety data supporting the rumor. The company has previously disclosed that its partners are running experiments across more than 30 areas spanning infectious disease and oncology.

Momentum Builds with Approvals, Royalty Resumption, and Raised Outlook

The speculation comes amid a broader wave of positive developments for Novavax. The company announced on August 28 that its partners received approvals for the XFG-adapted formulation of its Nuvaxovid COVID-19 vaccine, and its high-teens royalty structure on Sanofi’s global Nuvaxovid net sales resumed for 2026 and 2027.

Those developments followed Novavax’s second-quarter earnings on August 6, when the company reported revenue of $56.7 million, with product sales up 76% year-over-year on Matrix-M adjuvant demand and raised its 2026 adjusted total revenue framework to a range of $235 million to $275 million.
