Ascendis Pharma A/S (NASDAQ:ASND) shares are trading lower on Tuesday as investors digest news that the company will regain rights to certain TransCon technology-based programs and a share buyback.
ASND Regains TransCon Rights In Metabolic And Cardiovascular Programs
Ascendis said all rights to TransCon technology-based products in metabolic and cardiovascular diseases will revert to the company, including its once-monthly TransCon Semaglutide program.
The update follows the termination of the collaboration agreement between Ascendis and Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE:NVO) announced in November 2024.
The update also notes Ascendis plans to initiate multiple programs tied to that technology area as it takes back control of development.
On Monday, Ascendis Pharma also announced the repurchase of up to $400 million in shares.
ASND Technical Outlook: Key Moving Averages And Momentum
From a longer-term trend lens, the selloff pulls ASND below its key short- and medium-term trend gauges: it’s trading 10.3% below the 20-day SMA ($257.65) and 10% below the 50-day SMA ($256.57), which often signals that recent buyers are underwater and rallies can face supply.
The stock is also 5.9% below the 100-day SMA ($245.59) and now sits just 1.2% below the 200-day SMA ($233.92), making that longer-term line a near-term "line in the sand" for trend followers.
Momentum is best framed by MACD here: MACD is below its signal line and the histogram is negative, which points to upside pressure fading versus the prior upswing unless the stock can reclaim that baseline.
Even with that cooling momentum, the bigger-picture structure still shows the 20-day SMA above the 50-day SMA and the 50-day SMA above the 200-day SMA, so the pullback is happening inside what had been a bullish crossover stack.
- Key Resistance: $260.00 — a round-number area that also sits near the 20-day/50-day moving-average zone where rebounds can stall
- Key Support: $216.50 — a nearby prior demand area that becomes important if the stock loses the 200-day moving average region
Analyst Consensus & Recent Actions: The stock carries a Buy rating with an average price forecast of $319.47. Recent analyst moves include:
- Raymond James: Downgraded to Outperform (Maintains Price Forecast at $287) (September 15)
- Oppenheimer: Outperform (Raises Price Forecast to $312) (September 2)
- Morgan Stanley: Overweight (Lowers Price Forecast to $273) (September 1)
How ASND Ranks On Momentum And Value Factors
Below is the Benzinga Edge scorecard for Ascendis Pharma, highlighting its strengths and weaknesses compared to the broader market:
- Momentum: Bullish (Score: 84.79) — Despite today’s drop, the broader momentum profile still screens strong versus the market.
- Value: Weak (Score: 12.4) — The stock screens as expensive on value factors, which can make drawdowns sharper when sentiment shifts.
The Verdict: Ascendis Pharma’s Benzinga Edge signal reveals a momentum-driven profile with a weak value backdrop.
That mix often works best when price is trending cleanly, but it can get choppy when the stock loses key moving averages, and traders start demanding clearer execution milestones.
