Shares of Tempest Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:TPST) are trading sharply higher Wednesday morning as investors respond positively to a strategic agreement expanding the company’s next-generation cell therapy pipeline.
- Tempest Therapeutics shares are powering higher. What’s driving TPST stock higher?
Exclusive Option Expands In Vivo CAR-T Pipeline Across Oncology and Autoimmune Indications
Wednesday’s upside follows an announcement after market close on Tuesday confirming that Tempest entered into an exclusive option agreement to license Hebei Senlang Biotechnology’s CD7-targeted lentiviral vector platform and a portfolio of in vivo CAR-T product candidates.
Under the terms of the agreement, Tempest secures an exclusive option to acquire rights to Senlang’s proprietary lentiviral delivery platform, which generates CAR-T and CAR-NK cells directly inside the human body by selectively targeting endogenous CD7-positive T cells and natural killer cells.
Tempest says this approach is designed to bypass the complex, costly and time-consuming ex vivo cell harvesting and external laboratory manufacturing required by conventional autologous CAR-T therapies.
The licensed portfolio is anchored by a BCMA/GPRC5D dual-targeting in vivo CAR-T candidate currently in Phase 1 dose-escalation trials for relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma, alongside additional preclinical programs targeting hematologic malignancies and autoimmune diseases.
Highlighting the strategic rationale, Tempest President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Matt Angel stated: "Upon exercise of the option, the CD7-targeted lentiviral platform would complement our targeted LNP platform, providing two distinct approaches to generating CAR-T cells directly within patients."
Complementary Platform Strategy and Financing Bolster Operational Outlook
Tempest says the Senlang platform directly complements the company’s internal development efforts, including its lead candidate TPST-4003, which utilizes a CD7-targeted lipid nanoparticle delivery system.
The company says that the LNP platform offers a repeatable approach for transient CAR expression, the lentiviral platform is engineered for durable CAR-cell generation, establishing a dual-technology framework for systemic immune reset.
To reinforce capital flexibility during pipeline integration, Tempest paired the licensing news with a $2.5 million warrant-based private placement.
