Elon Musk‘s X just added a new “Trade” option to support the so-called Cashtag Partner Program.
The social media platform, previously known as Twitter, now lets users move directly from stock and cryptocurrency conversations to executing trades through participating brokerages, such as Interactive Brokers (NASDAQ:IBKR), Moomoo, Gemini, Kraken and Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN).
Under the new program, users tapping a supported Cashtag can view the asset’s price information and conversation on X before selecting “Trade” to continue to a participating brokerage.
Users can then log into an existing brokerage account or create a new one and complete the transaction directly through the broker’s mobile app or website.
"Cashtags close the gap between a ticker on the timeline and the market itself," Mridul Singhai, Product Engineering Lead at X, said.
X Links Financial Conversation With Trading
The feature positions Cashtags as a bridge between discovering an asset on X and acting on that information through a brokerage.
Monique Pintarelli, Head of Global Advertising at SpaceXAI, said the partnerships are designed to connect financial conversations with real-time action.
"With our Cashtag partners, we’re connecting the financial conversation to action," Pintarelli said.
The program covers both stocks and cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC), with X saying the feature makes it easier for traders and investors to move from market discussions and live charts to participating trading platforms.
X History
Musk co-founded X.com in 1999 and merged it with Confinity in 2000. That year, the company replaced him as CEO with Peter Thiel. Confinity became PayPal in 2001.
EBay Inc. (NASDAQ:EBAY) acquired PayPal in 2002 for $1.5 billion in stock, with Musk as its largest shareholder.
In 2017, Musk bought back the X.com domain from PayPal, saying it had "great sentimental value" to him. At the time, he said he had no plans for it.
In 2022, Musk purchased Twitter and, by 2023, renamed it X.
