Artelo Biosciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:ARTL) shares are surging Wednesday afternoon after the clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company announced the filing of a new provisional patent application covering its drug candidate ART27.13 for the treatment of obesity.
The patent submission protects ART27.13 both as a standalone monotherapy and in combination with GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as semaglutide.

Preclinical Weight-Loss Data and Metabolic Findings
The patent filing follows unexpected nonclinical findings from the firm’s DIO-2 obesity study disclosed on Wednesday, which expanded upon initial results released on Sept. 16.
Over a four-week treatment period in obese animal models, ART27.13 monotherapy produced approximately 20% weight loss from baseline, a result comparable to semaglutide alone. When administered in combination with semaglutide, the treatment resulted in a 40% reduction in baseline body weight.
Crucially, roughly 80% of the weight lost in ART27.13-treated groups was fat mass, compared to approximately 70% with semaglutide alone. The combination therapy also enhanced oral glucose tolerance, suppressed appetite and drove an increase in bone mineral density.
Management Commentary and IP Expansion
Highlighting the expanded therapeutic scope, president and CEO Gregory Gorgas stated that the findings “were unexpected and potentially expand the opportunity for ART27.13 well beyond our original hypothesis.”
Gorgas noted that seeing bone mineral density increase in the combination group was particularly notable given growing industry concern over bone and muscle loss during standard GLP-1 treatment.
He added that “the potential to enhance an established GLP-1 therapy while showing meaningful activity as a monotherapy is expected to create a new development path for ART27.13, and we intend to protect it as the science advances.”
