Bloom Energy Corp. (NYSE:BE) shares are rising Friday, rebounding after falling more than 6% Thursday on concerns tied to Oracle’s Project Jupiter data center.
- Bloom Energy stock is showing exceptional strength. Why are BE shares rallying?
A Quick Recap of Thursday’s Sellof
Bloom shares dropped Thursday following reports that Oracle Corp. (NYSE:ORCL) had triggered a force majeure clause connected to Project Jupiter, a sprawling New Mexico data center build that’s supposed to draw its power from Bloom’s fuel cell technology.
Investors worried that any hiccup in the project’s timeline could translate into pushed-back equipment installations and delayed revenue recognition for Bloom down the line. Both companies at the center of the story moved quickly to calm nerves: Oracle insisted the development remains on track, while Blue Owl Capital Inc. (NYSE:OWL), the firm developing the site, said nothing about its financial obligations to the multiyear project had actually shifted.
Today’s Bounce Follows a Volatile Stretch for a High-Flying Stock
No fresh headline appears to explain today’s recovery, but the move fits a broader pattern for a stock that’s climbed close to 277% over the past year. Gains that dramatic tend to make a stock jumpier in both directions, prone to outsized selloffs whenever bad news hits and equally capable of snapping back once reassuring statements.
Rebounds like this one are fairly common after a sharp single-day drop, for a few practical reasons. Traders who sold Thursday on the initial headline often reassess once the underlying company pushes back or the news turns out less severe than first feared, prompting some to buy back in.
Sharp drops can also overshoot the actual impact of the news, especially for a volatile, high-momentum stock, leaving room for a natural correction once the initial panic fades. And short sellers who bet against the stock during the selloff sometimes buy shares back to lock in gains, which itself adds buying pressure that can push the price higher the next session.
