PayPal Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:PYPL) stock is surging Friday on renewed acquisition rumors and a major artificial intelligence partnership.

Seeking Alpha reported Friday that a U.S. technology company based on the West Coast may be evaluating an all-stock takeover of the fintech firm, according to traders citing a Betaville “uncooked” market alert circulating Friday. PayPal’s board reportedly prefers an all-cash transaction.

Deal Talks and Consortium History

Traders noted that previous discussions between Stripe and PayPal hit an obstacle concerning a $2 billion breakup fee. The Stripe-Advent consortium previously considered paying up to $68 per share in cash before ending its pursuit last month, abandoning a prospective deal valued at more than $50 billion.

PayPal did not immediately respond to Benzinga’s request for comment.

Strategic Acquisition Proposal

Great Hill Capital Chairman Thomas Hayes suggested Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META) should purchase PayPal for $90 billion.

Writing as a shareholder on Wednesday, Hayes said he was thinking aloud about PYPL, noting that the new PayPal–Meta partnership is interesting for reasons beyond Agentic Commerce.

He argued that META could acquire PYPL for $90 billion, representing roughly a 7% free-cash-flow yield and making the deal immediately accretive, whether financed with cash, stock or a combination of both.

Hayes noted that combining PayPal’s user transaction data with Meta creates ad revenue capabilities comparable to Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), estimating a three-to-four-year payback period on a $90 billion valuation.

Technical Analysis

At $55.17, the stock is trading 2.8% above its 20-day SMA ($53.45) but 3.2% below its 50-day SMA ($56.79), putting it in a near-term "decision zone" where rallies often need follow-through to avoid rolling back into the range. The longer-term trend is better: shares are 8.5% above the 100-day SMA ($50.65) and 9% above the 200-day SMA ($50.45), which keeps the bigger picture constructive despite the choppier intermediate trend.

RSI is the cleaner momentum read right now, at 50.75, signaling neutral momentum rather than an overbought or oversold stretch.

The Moving-Average Structure is Mixed

The 20-day SMA remains below the 50-day SMA (a bearish short-term crossover), but the 50-day SMA is still above the 200-day SMA after the August golden cross, which is typically a longer-term bullish backdrop. From a levels standpoint, traders will likely watch whether price can reclaim and hold above the 50-day area to turn this bounce into a more durable trend leg.

  • Key Resistance: $59.50 — a nearby ceiling that lines up with a recent rebound-stall zone above the 50-day area
  • Key Support: $52 — a nearby floor that sits close to the 20-day/200-day neighborhood where buyers have recently defended pullbacks

PYPL Stock Price Activity: PayPal shares were up 4.80% to $55.13 at the time of publication on Friday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
