The biotech sector is heading into the third-quarter earnings season with a tug-of-war between higher interest rates and an unusually heavy pipeline of company-specific catalysts.

The SPDR S&P Biotech ETF (NYSE:XBI) is up about 27% year to date, but has declined roughly 8.3% in the past 30 days. The S&P 500, meanwhile, has gained about 13% year to date and 0.8% in the past month.

The divergence comes as the Federal Reserve has raised its benchmark rate by 25 basis points to 4.00%, its first hike since July 2023. The 10-year Treasury yield is also at its highest level since 2007, creating additional valuation pressure for smaller and mid-cap biotech companies.

More Than 40 Catalysts Ahead

Investing.com highlighted that B. Riley analyst Mayank Mamtani sees a stronger fundamental backdrop than in previous rate-hike cycles, with more than 40 company-specific catalysts across his coverage heading into late third quarter and fourth quarter.

The industry backdrop also has several potential tailwinds. Pharmaceutical M&A tied to upcoming loss-of-exclusivity events is tracking toward its strongest year since 2019, while permanent FDA leadership has been installed and drug-pricing uncertainty has eased through most-favored-nation agreements covering 26 companies, according to the analyst.

For XBI investors, the catalyst density offers a potential counterweight to the sector’s rate sensitivity.

TG Therapeutics Brings a Key XBI Catalyst

TG Therapeutics (NASDAQ:TGTX) is among the names to watch. The company is positioned around an approximately $1 billion U.S. Briumvi exit run rate at the end of 2026.

Its full Phase 3 ENHANCE results are expected at MSToronto2026 on October 21-23. Subcutaneous ublituximab Phase 3 data is expected late this year or in the first quarter of 2027.

That gives XBI investors exposure to a potentially significant company-specific event without having to make a single-stock bet.

Wide Dispersion Among Biotech Stocks

The individual performances also show how differently biotech stocks are trading. Eton Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ETON) is up 229% YTD, while Harrow (NASDAQ:HROW) is down 31%. Axsome Therapeutics (NASDAQ:AXSM) is up 6%, but remains about 20% below its YTD high.

Meanwhile, Cytokinetics, Incorporated’s (NASDAQ:CYTK) MYQORZO wholesale sales are tracking toward roughly $18 million for the third quarter, versus $8.9 million for the entire second quarter, according to B. Riley.

That dispersion is important for XBI. With roughly 160-plus holdings, no single company dominates the portfolio; the ETF spreads exposure across a broad set of biotech outcomes.

The result is a clear macro-versus-fundamentals test. Rising Treasury yields are challenging biotech valuations just as a packed catalyst calendar gives the sector more opportunities to prove its fundamentals.
