Shares of D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NASDAQ:QBTS) are trading marginally lower Tuesday morning, extending recent downside momentum as investors weigh September commercial milestones against recent leadership turnover. Here’s what investors need to know.
- D-Wave Quantum stock is under selling pressure. Why are QBTS shares declining?
Federal CHIPS Award and CGI Partnership Expand Commercial Reach
D-Wave finalized several major operational and government agreements throughout the month. On Sept. 8, the company signed a definitive agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce under the CHIPS and Science Act for up to $100 million in federal funding to advance domestic quantum microelectronics manufacturing.
The award includes an initial tranche of $53.55 million, with subsequent disbursements tied to specific technical milestones, such as quantum processing unit prototype fabrication and process integration, in exchange for a government minority equity stake.
Building on its commercial expansion, D-Wave partnered with global IT consulting firm CGI on Sept. 23 to accelerate enterprise quantum adoption in logistics, transportation, and supply chain management.
Commenting on the enterprise push, CGI Chief Technology Officer Dave Henderson noted that “organizations are moving beyond research to evaluate where quantum technologies can improve optimization and enhance decision-making,” specifically pointing to applications like train scheduling and supply chain planning.
Additionally, D-Wave showcased its dual-platform annealing and gate-model quantum technologies at the Quantum World Congress (held Sept. 23–25). To bolster corporate governance, D-Wave appointed Bernard Gavgani to its Board of Directors and Cybersecurity Committee on Sept. 21.
September’s Executive Reshuffle
Despite commercial momentum, a recent executive transition is potentially dragging on investor sentiment. The resignation of former Chief Financial Officer John Markovich officially took effect on Sept. 2, leading to the formal appointment of Gregory Golkov as acting CFO.
