Google Appeals EU Orders On Search Data and Android Access
Google confirmed Tuesday it has taken its case to the EU’s General Court in Luxembourg, pushing back against rules Brussels proposed in July requiring the company to share search data with rival engines and open Android further to competing AI tools. Google’s position is that Android already welcomes outside services, and it argues the search rules lack adequate safeguards and user consent.
Google’s senior director for competition, Oliver Bethell, said the company is appealing decisions that would “weaken vital security protections on Android.” He also warned that turning over people’s search histories, covering topics as sensitive as health concerns and personal relationships, without sufficiently anonymizing that data first could permanently damage user trust.
Brussels sees it differently, maintaining the rules include privacy protections such as anonymizing shared data and letting Google flag recipients it considers security risks. The search-sharing requirement kicks in starting January 2027, while separate Android changes due next year would let rival AI assistants tap into capabilities currently exclusive to Google’s own tools, such as Gemini.
The stock has already been under scrutiny around AI governance more broadly. On Monday, a research paper from prominent AI scientists called for greater regulatory oversight of AI research automation, a separate story that had already pressured Alphabet shares heading into this week.
Alphabet’s Chart Shows a Stock in Choppy Consolidation
Alphabet has been grinding sideways since peaking in August, though the broader trend over the past year still points upward even with near-term momentum losing steam. Shares sit 0.9% under the 20-day average of $338.62 and 1.8% beneath the 50-day mark of $341.55.
The level worth watching most is the 200-day average around $336.97, with the stock trading just 0.4% below it. Holding that line would likely cushion further weakness, while losing it could open the door to a steeper slide. RSI sits at 45.46, showing neither side in control. Traders are watching $348 as resistance and $325.50 as support if the 200-day average gives way.
