Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) highlighted low unemployment claims as a sign of labor market strength while urging Congress to pursue spending cuts and policies aimed at easing pressures on small businesses.
Scott Highlights Low Jobless Claims
On Tuesday, Scott said in a post on X that new unemployment claims remained at historically low levels.
"GREAT NEWS: Unemployment claims continue to come in at around 57-year lows!" he said.
He linked the labor market to economic opportunity, writing, "Jobs are the key to living the American Dream."
Scott added, "Now, Congress needs to get out of small businesses’ way and cut spending so our economy can keep growing, and our job market can thrive!"
Jobs Rebounded In August
The U.S. economy added 162,000 jobs in August, significantly exceeding expectations for a 56,000 increase and rebounding from July’s revised 21,000 gain.
Private payrolls rose by 127,000, while government employment increased by 35,000, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Food services and drinking places added 59,000 jobs, while local government education gained 42,000. Information employment declined by 23,000, while health care added 13,000 and manufacturing added 16,000.
June’s payroll gain was also revised higher by 11,000 to 31,000, while July’s result was revised upward by 44,000 to a 21,000 gain. Together, the two months were revised 55,000 higher than previously reported.
Private-Sector Hiring
Last week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said more than 1 million private-sector jobs had been created since January 2025, while the federal workforce had fallen to its lowest level since the 1960s. He also said more than 1.3 million additional native-born Americans had entered employment.
In August, Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) reportedly reached out to former employees, including some who had been laid off, to fill AI and cloud-computing roles.
The company also offered some former workers a faster path to new positions. Amazon spokesperson Haley Silva said "boomerang hiring" was a regular companywide practice.
