Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCX) CEO Elon Musk has reframed one of his earliest warnings about superintelligence, saying humanity serving as a "biological bootloader" for machine intelligence could represent a successful outcome if that intelligence ultimately spreads beyond Earth.
Musk Recasts A Decade-Old AI Warning
"Propagating super intelligence to the stars is a great success condition for a biological bootloader," Musk wrote Sunday on X, responding to a discussion revisiting his warnings about advanced AI.
The comment marks a striking shift in tone from August 2014, when Musk wrote, "Hope we’re not just the biological boot loader for digital superintelligence. Unfortunately, that is increasingly probable." At the time, he had recommended Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom’s Superintelligence and warned, "We need to be super careful with AI. Potentially more dangerous than nukes."
Musk has continued to warn about the risks of advanced AI. Last month, he renewed his long-running AI risk warning, saying artificial general intelligence poses a greater risk than nuclear weapons. Reuters has also reported that Musk supports calls from leading AI executives for stronger safeguards and a slower pace at the frontier.
Space Becomes Part Of AI Vision
His latest remark instead links that risk debate with SpaceX’s founding goal of making life multiplanetary. SpaceX says Starship is designed to carry people and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond, while the company describes a future of humanity "out exploring the stars" as central to its mission.
That connection has become increasingly literal. Musk has argued that space will eventually become essential for scaling AI compute, while SpaceX now lists "developing orbital AI compute" among its core initiatives.
Orbital Compute Plans Move Closer
The company is developing Starmind satellites for orbital computing and Musk has said Nvidia-powered AI computers could begin reaching orbit. Starship’s first orbital mission last month deployed 26 Starlink V3 satellites, advancing the launch system expected to underpin those ambitions.
Musk also said Saturday that SpaceXAI would be renamed SpaceXSI, replacing "artificial intelligence" with "super intelligence."
Price Action: SpaceX shares closed 7.35% at $158.96 on Friday, according to Benzinga Pro.
