Japan-based Metaplanet Inc. (OTC:MTPLF) is now the world’s second-largest corporate holder of Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) after reporting a fresh purchase of 1,000 BTC on Monday.

‘Asia’s Strategy’ Races Ahead

The Tokyo-headquartered company bought 1,000 BTC in the third quarter, raising its total holdings to 44,000 BTC, worth $3.7 billion, as of Sept. 30

Metplanet sold 10,000 BTC and purchased 11,000 BTC during the quarter, resulting in a net increase of 1,000 BTC in its holdings. The sale aimed to boost confidence in the company’s “creditworthiness” and expand its access to “future financing.”

Bitcoin currently makes up the majority of Metaplanet’s assets on its balance sheet.

The latest purchase leaves it second only to Strategy Inc. (NASDAQ:MSTR), which dominates the leaderboard with a whopping 848,000 BTC, worth over $69 billion.

Metaplanet’s stash is significantly larger than that of some of the biggest public companies in the U.S., including Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCX), Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Coinbase Global Inc. (NASDAQ:COIN).

Will Metaplanet End Q4 Well?

Often called “Asia’s Strategy,” Metaplanet is moving into the U.S. market through a deal to create a new publicly listed Bitcoin treasury platform. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026.

The company has faced pressures in the Bitcoin bear market, with its stock falling 28% year-to-date. Metaplanet’s total market value, including debt and preferred stock, has fallen below the value of its Bitcoin holdings.

Price Action: As of this writing, BTC is up 2.67% in the last 24 hours to $2,739, according to Benzinga Pro.

Metaplanet shares closed 0.89% lower at $1.80 during Monday’s regular trading session. The stock showed a weaker price trend across short-, medium-, and long-term timeframes, according to Benzinga’s Edge Stock Rankings.
