Elon Musk said on Wednesday that he keeps engaging in cultural and political fights because he views them as part of a broader struggle for the survival of civilization, in response to a French user who questioned why the world's richest man does not simply enjoy his wealth.
Musk Says Civilization Stakes Come First
"Nothing else matters if civilization falls," Musk wrote on X in response to French tech figure Brivael Le Pogam.
Le Pogam, writing in French, asked why Musk spends his days in cultural battles on social media instead of enjoying his billions on a beach. His post listed Musk's companies and projects, including Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA), SpaceX, Optimus, Starlink, The Boring Company, Neuralink and Grok, as examples of technological efforts tied to a larger mission.
Musk has often argued that preserving human consciousness and preventing humanity’s extinction should be the highest priority. In that view, political, economic and social disputes matter only if civilization survives long enough for humanity to solve larger problems.
Birthrates And AI Shape Musk's Warnings
The billionaire has repeatedly warned that falling birthrates pose one of the greatest threats to civilization. He has said that if people do not have more children, civilization could "crumble," a claim that has drawn both support from pronatalist advocates and criticism from those who say economic insecurity, housing costs and child care burdens are driving family decisions.
Musk has also warned about artificial intelligence. He has said poorly aligned artificial general intelligence could eventually outpace human control, making biological humans irrelevant or vulnerable. At the same time, his xAI company is racing to develop Grok, highlighting the tension between his warnings and his business ambitions.
SpaceX Fits Broader Survival Mission
SpaceX reflects another piece of Musk's worldview. He has said that making humanity multi-planetary would reduce the risk that a catastrophe on Earth, including nuclear war or an asteroid strike, could end human civilization.
Musk has used the same "civilization" framing in several recent posts, including warnings about fertility decline, public safety, free speech and Western cultural institutions.
