A Russian national accused of helping facilitate cyberattacks linked to the Kremlin-aligned hacking group Void Blizzard has been extradited to the U.S. after being arrested in Thailand last year.
Suspect Faces US Charges In Alleged Void Blizzard Cyber Espionage Case
Denis Obrezko, 36, made his initial appearance in federal court in Boston on Tuesday after being transferred to U.S. custody, Reuters reported.
Prosecutors charged him with conspiracy to commit unauthorized access to a protected computer in connection with an alleged cyber espionage operation targeting organizations in the U.S. and other countries.
Obrezko is being held without bond while the Justice Department’s National Security Division prosecutes the case.
The Justice Department did not immediately respond to Benzinga's request for comments.
Microsoft Identified Void Blizzard As Russia-Linked Hacking Group
Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) flagged Void Blizzard in a May 2025 report, describing it as a newly identified threat actor engaged in cyber espionage activities aligned with Russian government interests.
According to the company, the group has been active since at least April 2024 and has targeted organizations across NATO member states and Ukraine.
Alleged victims span multiple sectors, including government, defense, transportation, healthcare, media and nongovernmental organizations.
FBI Says US Companies Were Among Cyberattack Victims
An FBI affidavit filed in support of the case said Void Blizzard’s operations focused heavily on harvesting emails from a broad range of U.S. industries.
Investigators have identified at least 11 U.S. companies that were compromised, though authorities believe the actual number of victims is significantly higher.
According to court documents, the FBI traced cryptocurrency transactions linked to Obrezko that were allegedly used to purchase a virtual private server and domain name.
Authorities say that infrastructure was later used in cyberattacks targeting companies in the United States and elsewhere.
The charges represent the latest U.S. effort to disrupt alleged Russia-linked cyber espionage campaigns targeting American organizations and critical sectors.
