U.S. stock futures were higher heading into Monday morning as investors weighed an escalating military campaign against Iran, rising American casualties, and renewed concerns over global oil supplies.
The Polygon-based (CRYPTO: POL) Polymarket crowd is leaning optimistic for the July 20 opening bell. The “S&P 500 (SPX) Up or Down on July 20?” betting contract currently reflects a 68% chance of an “Up” open. Early trading volume for the Monday contract sits at $12,272.

Why That Number Matters
The macroeconomic and geopolitical landscape over the weekend has grown increasingly complex, pulling markets in conflicting directions:
- Higher Futures: Equity benchmarks are pointing to a divergent open. S&P 500 futures were up 0.13%, while Nasdaq 100 futures advanced 0.43%. Dow Jones futures were up 0.02%.
- Energy Supply Fears: The U.S. military carried out a ninth consecutive night of strikes against Iran to degrade capabilities used to attack commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Consequently, energy markets remain highly elevated, with Brent crude gaining 2.33% to $90.15 per barrel. WTI crude futures were last quoted at $83.55 per barrel.
- Mounting Casualties: President Donald Trump confirmed that the U.S. troop death toll has now climbed to 17 since the conflict began, signaling that the military campaign will persist.
The Market Outlook & Commentary
According to market commentator Mohamed A. El-Erian, the global economy continues to navigate a period of notable geo-economic and technological fluidity. Last week, stock market confidence was heavily shaken by geopolitical flare-ups, softer inflation data, and sector-specific valuation recalibrations.
El-Erian highlights that the ongoing tech wobble, which began with highly leveraged pooled vehicles in South Korea, has intensified the debate over whether equity pricing and financial flows are properly aligned with the underlying macroeconomic landscape.
He also notes that Brent crude approaching $90 a barrel risks broader macroeconomic complications, especially for central banks trying to manage the “last mile” of their disinflation fight. This week, investor attention will center on mega-cap technology earnings, including Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA), as well as the European Central Bank’s policy meeting.
How The Previous Bet Played Out: As the Polymarket trade for this particular contract wasn’t open on Friday, the Thursday, July 16, Polymarket contract resolved “Down.” The market drew significant participation, closing with a final volume of $190,319.
