American Airlines Group Inc. (NASDAQ:AAL) stock was down more than 1% on Wednesday as investors turned cautious ahead of the airline’s quarterly earnings report.

The stock underperformed even as the broader market remained mixed. The Industrials sector rose 0.57%, while the S&P 500 edged up 0.08%. The Nasdaq slipped 0.19%.

Market breadth remained positive, with nine of 11 sectors advancing and an advance-decline ratio of 4.5. That suggests Wednesday’s weakness was driven more by company-specific positioning than a broader risk-off move.

American Airlines Earnings In Focus

American Airlines is scheduled to report second-quarter results on Thursday, July 23. Investors will be watching for updates on travel demand, pricing, operating costs and the company’s outlook for the second half of the year.

Wall Street expects American Airlines to report earnings of 4 cents per share, down from 95 cents a year earlier. Revenue is projected to rise to $16.68 billion from $14.40 billion.

The stock trades at about 49.3 times earnings. Analysts maintain a consensus Hold rating with an average price forecast of $19.44. Recent analyst actions include:

Technical Picture Weakens Short Term

American Airlines is showing mixed technical signals. The stock is trading 9.8% below its 20-day simple moving average of $16.70 and is nearly flat compared with its 50-day SMA of $15.11. That points to weaker short-term momentum.

However, the longer-term trend remains constructive. Shares are 13.3% above the 100-day SMA of $13.30 and 10.6% above the 200-day SMA of $13.62.

The moving average convergence divergence indicator remains below its signal line, while the histogram is negative. That suggests bullish momentum has faded following the stock’s July peak.

Key resistance sits near $16.00, close to the 20-day exponential moving average of $15.93. Key support is around $13.00, near the 100-day and 200-day moving averages.
