Micron Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:MU) stock dropped on Friday morning, primarily driven by widespread sector profit-taking following an aggressive, short-lived relief rally earlier in the week. The Nasdaq is up 0.61% while the S&P 500 has gained 0.12%.

The pressure follows the forced liquidation of over-leveraged AI hedge fund Situational Awareness. Speaking on a recent podcast with TBPN, former hedge fund manager Martin Shkreli explained that aggressive trading tactics accelerate sell-offs during margin calls, noting that rival traders short related holdings and stating, "We’ll send Micron to $5, you know, just to eliminate this guy at three, right?"

Margin Calls Trigger Forced Unwinds

Situational Awareness reportedly operated on 4x leverage, leaving equity vulnerable to market drawdowns. Investor Ross Gerber commented on the fund’s collapse in a Friday post on X, stating: "Leverage will kill and bury you."

Shkreli described heavily capitalized firms like Ken Griffin’s Citadel as acting like "shadow banks" to acquire distressed assets. Futurum Equities analyst Shay Boloor pointed out that Citadel Securities pushed rate-hike concerns shortly before the AI trade unwound.

Compounding downside pressure, investor Michael Burry revealed in a Thursday post on his Substack ‘Trading Post’ that he expanded short exposure in Micron around $880, alongside bearish bets on Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA).

Micron Technology Stock: Key Levels To Watch

From a trend perspective, the bigger picture is still constructive: the stock is up 681.26% over the past 12 months and remains 64.4% above its 200-day SMA ($518.25). That said, the intermediate trend has cooled, with shares trading 6.7% below the 20-day SMA ($913.17) and 11.8% below the 50-day SMA ($965.44).

Momentum is better described as "resetting" than breaking: RSI is 45.72, which signals neutral momentum and suggests the stock isn’t especially stretched in either direction right now.

The moving-average structure shows a near-term headwind, with the 20-day SMA sitting below the 50-day SMA (a bearish crossover that often caps rebounds). Longer-term trend support is still intact because the 50-day SMA remains above the 200-day SMA, but traders will likely want to see price reclaim shorter averages to argue the June swing-high area is back in play.

  • Key Resistance: $1012 — a round-number zone near the stock’s shorter-term moving-average "ceiling," where rebounds can stall
  • Key Support: $804 — a nearby pivot area that sits close enough to current levels to matter if selling pressure persists

MU Stock Price Activity: Micron Technology shares were down 4.33% at $836.82 at the time of publication on Friday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
