Semiconductor stocks attempted to stabilize in Friday’s session as investors reassessed the artificial intelligence trade and digested recent chip earnings.
Chip Stocks Recover After Pullback
Semiconductor stocks posted modest gains after a sharp midweek selloff reset expectations across AI-linked names.
The weakness followed a series of earnings reports from memory and storage companies. Sandisk Corp. (NASDAQ:SNDK) and Western Digital Corp. (NASDAQ:WDC) delivered strong quarterly results, but their forward revenue guidance failed to meet elevated investor expectations. That disappointment weighed on both stocks and dragged the broader chip sector lower.
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NASDAQ:AMD) also reported a record quarter for its data center business, but its third-quarter revenue outlook fell short of lofty Wall Street expectations.
Meanwhile, sentiment shifted after Elon Musk said Space Exploration Technologies Corp. would build its AI computing infrastructure exclusively with NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) hardware, reinforcing NVIDIA’s leadership in AI infrastructure and giving the stock a relative boost over some rivals.
The tone has improved across the sector. A Benzinga report said investors rotated back into technology stocks after a weaker-than-expected U.S. jobs report boosted expectations that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates unchanged rather than resume tightening next month. The shift in rate expectations helped lift growth stocks, including semiconductor names that had sold off earlier in the week.
Leveraged semiconductor ETF Direxion Daily Semiconductor Bull 3X Shares (NYSE:SOXL) jumped more than 5%, reflecting renewed appetite for AI-related chip stocks after the two-year Treasury yield sank nearly seven basis points.
Among individual semiconductor names, Microchip Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:MCHP) gained 4.5%, Monolithic Power Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:MPWR) advanced nearly 3%, while AI infrastructure plays Astera Labs Inc. (NASDAQ:ALAB), Teradyne Inc. (NASDAQ:TER), KLA Corp. (NASDAQ:KLAC) and Rambus Inc. (NASDAQ:RMBS) all traded firmly higher.
Global Chip Demand Remains Strong
Despite the earnings-driven volatility, industry demand continues to point higher.
The Semiconductor Industry Association said global chip sales reached $403.3 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 35.1% from the first quarter.
SIA President and CEO John Neuffer said global semiconductor sales are expected to surpass $1.5 trillion in 2026, driven by continued strength across the Americas, Asia-Pacific and China.
The combination of strong demand and persistent supply-chain concerns underscores the challenge facing U.S. policymakers: expanding domestic manufacturing capacity while accelerating research efforts and securing reliable access to critical materials.
