Eli Lilly and Co (NYSE:LLY) is intensifying its battle against the illegal distribution of its investigational drug, retatrutide.
The pharmaceutical giant on Wednesday filed six new lawsuits against U.S. businesses accused of peddling unapproved, black-market versions of the molecule, while concurrently referring hundreds of illicit operators to global law enforcement and regulatory agencies.
Dangers Of Unapproved Retatrutide
Currently undergoing Phase 3 clinical trials for obesity and type 2 diabetes, retatrutide has not received authorization for human consumption from any global regulatory body.
Despite this, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other health authorities warn that bad actors are illegally marketing the substance to consumers.
Unregulated entities, masquerading as legitimate wellness clinics or medical spas, are reportedly promoting retatrutide as a weight-loss shortcut.
Authorities caution that these products, often sourced from unregulated foreign manufacturers, carry severe health risks.
The FDA emphasizes that these unapproved medications cannot be legally compounded and that items labeled strictly for “research use” present unknown dangers to patients.
Broad Legal And Regulatory Crackdown
The recent litigation by Eli Lilly targets online vendors, medical spas, and compounding pharmacies that falsely advertise the drug.
Beyond civil lawsuits, the company has escalated the issue by reporting over 200 offenders to the FDA, the U.S. Department of Justice, and state attorneys general.
To further choke off this illicit supply chain, the drugmaker is pressing financial institutions, e-commerce networks, payment processors, and shipping carriers to sever ties with illegal sellers.
The company has already flagged over 14,000 fraudulent social media posts, websites, and product listings across more than 100 countries.
However, they caution that some digital platforms continue to amplify misleading content, putting vulnerable consumers at risk.
LLY Stock Price Activity: Eli Lilly shares were up 0.84% at $1224 at the time of publication on Wednesday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
