Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META) shares are falling on Wednesday, well behind the Communication Services sector’s 0.8% decline, as the stock’s weak technical setup left it exposed to selling pressure.
- Meta Platforms stock is among today’s weakest performers. What’s weighing on META shares?
Why META Stock Is Underperforming Its Sector
Meta’s decline outpaced its own sector by roughly 2.23 percentage points, leaving Communication Services ranked ninth out of 11 sectors on the day. That weakness fits a longer pattern: the sector has fallen 1.08% over the past 30 days and 5.74% over the past 90 days, a stretch that has made individual stocks within it more vulnerable when momentum-driven traders pull back exposure.
With the group already out of favor, dip buyers tend to show less conviction and sellers face less resistance when a laggard like Meta comes under pressure.
META’s Chart Still Points to a Stock in Repair
Meta entered the session trading below its 20-day, 50-day, 100-day and 200-day simple moving averages, at $601.14, $597.92, $608.17 and $629.17, respectively. That alignment keeps the stock’s intermediate trend tilted lower, even though the 20-day average holding above the 50-day offers a small near-term positive. The bigger technical backdrop still centers on a death cross from December 2025, when the 50-day average dropped below the 200-day.
Momentum readings aren’t helping the case for a rebound. The MACD indicator sits below its signal line with a negative histogram, pointing to fading upward momentum unless buyers step back in. Traders are watching $606 as key resistance, a level near the 100-day average where past rallies have stalled, and $577 as key support, a level where dip buyers have shown up recently.
The stock remains well below its 52-week high of $796.25 and sits in the lower half of its 52-week range of $520.26 to $796.25. Shares are down 26.26% over the past 12 months, a stretch that keeps Meta in recovery mode until it can reclaim ground around its 200-day average.
Benzinga Edge Scorecard Shows Growth Strength, Momentum Weakness
Meta’s Benzinga Edge scorecard reflects the same split. Momentum scores weak at 12 out of 100, consistent with the stock trading below its key moving averages.
Quality sits at a neutral 66.95, suggesting the current pressure stems more from trend and positioning than from balance sheet concerns. Value scores a neutral 54.02, indicating shares may need clearer growth reacceleration to justify a higher valuation. Growth scores strong at 74.93, showing the underlying business remains viewed as solid even as the market waits for stronger confirmation.
German Privacy Complaint Adds to Meta’s Headlines
Meta also drew attention Wednesday after a German digital rights group, HateAid, filed a criminal complaint against the company and other retailers over privacy concerns tied to its Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, according to Reuters.
