Mesoblast Limited (NASDAQ:MESO) stock is trading higher on Monday after the company concluded patient dosing for its crucial Phase 3 clinical trial evaluating rexlemestrocel-L.
The off-the-shelf cellular therapy aims to treat chronic low back pain linked to inflammatory degenerative disc disease, targeting a massive indication with a peak revenue potential exceeding $10 billion.
High Demand Drives Trial Expansion
The MSB-DR004 study successfully randomized and administered treatments to 350 individuals, who received either a sham injection or a direct intra-discal dose of rexlemestrocel-L.
Originally targeting 300 participants, the company expanded the cohort to 350 participants due to substantial enrollment interest from clinical investigators.
Assessing Pain Relief And Opioid Reduction
The primary goal of the trial is to validate the lasting pain relief observed over a 12-month period following a single injection, a result previously noted in the MSB-DR003 study.
Armed with a larger participant base, the trial is well-equipped to demonstrate the therapeutic advantages over the control group.
Beyond primary pain reduction, researchers are tracking secondary outcomes such as functional improvements and enhanced quality of life.
The trial monitors the cessation of pain medications, particularly opioids. Discogenic back pain currently drives roughly half of all opioid prescriptions in the United States.
Market Potential And Regulatory Pathway
Inflammation-driven chronic low back pain afflicts upwards of 7 million Americans. Capturing just a single-digit percentage of this market could yield immense financial returns for the global cellular medicine developer.
Rexlemestrocel-L, designed for patients suffering from the condition for under five years, already holds a Regenerative Medicine Advanced Therapy designation from the FDA.
This status paves the way for a priority review once a Biologics License Application is submitted. Final top-line data will be released in mid-2027 after the final patient finishes the one-year follow-up.
MESO Price Action: Mesoblast shares were up 9.84% to $17.13 at the time of publication on Monday, according to Benzinga Pro data.
