Marvell Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:MRVL) stock is trading lower by nearly 6% in Tuesday’s premarket session as investors pull back from high-valuation chip stocks. Nasdaq futures are down 1.18%, while S&P 500 futures have shed 0.44%.
Marvell’s decline comes as investors turn cautious on growth stocks ahead of the company’s Aug. 27 earnings report. The broader market is also under pressure, with technology stocks facing heavier selling.
Expectations remain high heading into the report. Analysts expect Marvell to post earnings of 87 cents per share, up from 67 cents a year earlier. Revenue is expected to rise to $2.71 billion from $2.01 billion.
That growth comes with a premium valuation. Marvell trades at about 80.5 times earnings, leaving the stock more exposed if results or guidance disappoint investors.
Technical Analysis
Marvell remains above its longer-term moving averages. The stock is about 55% above its 200-day simple moving average of $142.18 and 11% above its 100-day SMA of $199.25.
However, shares are about 7% below the 50-day SMA of $236.46. The 20-day SMA of $204.48 also sits below the 50-day average, pointing to weaker intermediate momentum.
Still, the 50-day SMA remains above the 200-day average. That signals the longer-term uptrend remains intact despite recent volatility.
Meanwhile, the MACD is above its signal line, and the histogram is positive. That suggests selling momentum has eased. The $178 level could provide support if the pullback deepens.
Analyst Outlook
Wall Street remains bullish on Marvell. The stock carries a Buy consensus rating and an average price forecast of $269.09.
UBS maintained a Buy rating Monday but lowered its price forecast to $300. KeyBanc raised its price forecast to $400 from a prior level in July while maintaining an Overweight rating. RBC Capital maintained an Outperform rating and a $360 price forecast in July.
Benzinga Edge Rankings
Marvell scores strongly on Benzinga Edge for Growth and Momentum, with scores of 99.78 and 98.56, respectively. However, its Value score stands at just 1.29.
The combination highlights the stock’s strong growth profile but also its elevated valuation. As a result, earnings and guidance may need to meet high investor expectations to support the stock’s premium.
ETF Exposure
Marvell has significant weightings in several technology-focused ETFs. It accounts for 8.20% of the Global X Artificial Intelligence & Technology ETF (NASDAQ:AIQ), 5.69% of the State Street SPDR NYSE Technology ETF (NYSE:XNTK) and 5.12% of the Invesco PHLX Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXQ).
Those weightings can increase Marvell’s exposure to broader fund flows across semiconductor and artificial intelligence stocks.
Price Action
MRVL Price Action: Marvell Technology shares fell 5.52% to $221.39 in Tuesday’s premarket trading, according to Benzinga Pro data.
