Elon Musk may be one of the richest people in the world, but he doesn’t spend much time buying stocks. Musk owns shares of Tesla and SpaceX, the two companies he is CEO of. Otherwise, his investments are limited. While he’s not a regular stock picker, Musk did share three things he would look for if he was investing in companies.

Elon Musk’s Investment Advice

In an interview with Nikhil Kamath in November 2025, Musk was asked about what he would look for investing in companies.

The billionaire shared three things to look for when making an investment:

  • 1. Do you like the product/company
  • 2. Are they likely to improve in the future
  • 3. Do you believe in the team

Musk said it’s important to believe in the product or services of a company and to like their product roadmap, which could indicate if they are going to make great products in the future.

"I would say that’s probably a good company to invest in," Musk said.

He added that it’s important for companies to have a talented, hardworking team that remains motivated. He said a company is just a group of people who make products and services.

These three factors are important to consider before investing, Musk said, but noted that they won’t solve for daily fluctuations.

Musk the Builder, Not the Investor

During the same interview, Musk was asked to name companies outside of his own that he would invest in.

"I don’t really buy stocks," Musk told Kamath. "I don’t look for things to invest in. I just try to build things."

Citing future growth in AI and robotics, Musk highlighted two potential stocks he liked at the time.

"Google is gonna be pretty valuable in the future."

Musk also singled out another Magnificent Seven name.

"Nvidia is obvious at this point."

Musk said companies in AI, robotics and maybe spaceflight could end up representing nearly all of the world’s future economic value.
