Sunshine Biopharma Inc. (NASDAQ:SBFM) on Wednesday released an update regarding its proprietary oncology initiative, outlining key next steps for its K1.1 mRNA lipid nanoparticle program.

K1.1 mRNA Preclinical Results

The K1.1 mRNA gene acts as a tumor suppressor frequently mutated in hepatocellular carcinoma, non-small cell lung cancer, and pancreatic cancer.

These genetic mutations form “cold” tumors that evade host immune responses, leading to poor prognosis in patients.

Preclinical studies confirm successful systemic in vivo delivery of K1.1 mRNA lipid nanoparticles.

The candidate demonstrated good tolerability and restored target tumor suppressor expression in grafted liver tumors in a dose-dependent manner.

Additionally, single-agent proof-of-concept tests demonstrated tumor-suppressing activity in at least two orthotopic hepatocellular carcinoma mouse models.

Future Dual-Therapy Strategy

In vitro testing has shown that administering K1.1 mRNA alone produces antiproliferative effects across multiple non-small cell lung cancer cell lines.

Moving forward, the company plans to evaluate concurrent in vivo delivery of K1.1 mRNA alongside a cancer vaccine targeting associated antigens for non-small cell lung cancer.

The update is notable after Moderna Inc. (NASDAQ:MRNA) and Merck & Co Inc. (NYSE:MRK) shared upbeat data from mRNA-based individualized cancer therapy for advanced skin cancer.

At a pre-planned interim analysis, the investigational combination delivered statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements in recurrence-free survival and distant metastasis-free survival compared to standard Keytruda alone.

The dual approach aims to transform “cold” tumors into “hot” immune-responsive tumors while halting growth and targeting mutated oncogenes.

Commercial Footprint And Development Pipeline

The pharmaceutical firm currently maintains 60 generic prescription medications on the Canadian market, with plans to introduce roughly 12 additional drugs throughout the remainder of 2026.

Beyond generic offerings, the organization advances a proprietary drug pipeline featuring two core assets: K1.1 mRNA targeting liver cancer and a PLpro protease inhibitor small molecule designed for SARS-CoV-2 infections.

SBFM Price Action: Sunshine Biopharma shares were up 1.75% at $1.15 during premarket trading on Wednesday. The stock is trading near its 52-week low of $1.03, according to Benzinga Pro data.
