GameStop Corp. (NYSE:GME) stock is trending Friday after the company announced Thursday that select closed stores are reopening nationwide starting today, coming just days after its second-quarter earnings report.

GameStop Revives Select Locations Amid Retail Reset

GameStop posted on X, “Your local GameStop is back. Select closed stores are now reopening nationwide starting September 11,” signaling a notable reversal after the company shuttered hundreds of locations over the past two years as part of a broader cost-cutting and diversification strategy. GameStop’s U.S. store count has fallen from more than 2,900 in early 2024 to under 1,600 as the retailer shifted focus toward collectibles, trading cards and its balance sheet.

The reopening announcement suggests the company may be finding a more stable footprint after years of consolidation, though GameStop has not detailed which locations are affected or how many stores will reopen.

Mixed Q2 Results Amid Strategic Shift

GameStop reported second-quarter results on September 8, with adjusted earnings per share of 27 cents, in line with the consensus estimate. Quarterly revenue fell to $790.2 million from $972.2 million a year earlier, which the company attributed to the absence of a Nintendo Switch 2 launch tailwind, ongoing store closures and the sale of its French business — though the figure still beat the consensus estimate of $756.85 million.

By category, collectibles revenue rose to $356.3 million from $227.6 million a year earlier, while video game sales fell to $263.2 million from $494.6 million, and pre-owned and refurbished product sales declined to $170.7 million from $250 million. GameStop ended the quarter with $5.4 billion in total cash, cash equivalents, marketable securities, digital assets, and related receivables, and held approximately 43.4 million shares of eBay common stock.
