On Monday, billionaire investor Mark Cuban warned that social media algorithms could amplify anti-AI sentiment even as companies like Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:META) and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) pour billions of dollars into building and promoting artificial intelligence.

Mark Cuban on Social Media’s AI Paradox

Cuban made the comments on X, arguing that social media algorithms could create an unexpected problem for companies developing AI.

"I think it’s going to be interesting to watch the irony of the social media algos amplifying the [anti-AI] sentiment far beyond any positive AI sentiment," Cuban wrote.

He added that Meta and Google could end up "trying to make enough money from pushing people to hate AI, to subsidize their AI."

Meta and Google did not immediately respond to Benzinga’s request for comment.

A user responding to Cuban argued that algorithms do not need to be explicitly anti-AI. Instead, they may simply learn that fear, anger and anxiety over AI keep users engaged longer than positive content.

Cuban replied, "I look at those as being the same."

Cuban Sees Bigger Risk In Human Reactions

In a follow-up post, Cuban expanded on his argument, saying frontier AI companies may have powerful models but lack control over the social media systems that determine what content goes viral.

He said he believes there is a "far greater risk from what humans do in response to what they see on social media than what agent swarms will do."

Cuban added that the equation could change if AI agents eventually gain control of social media algorithms.

AI Backlash Is Already Growing

Cuban previously linked opposition to AI data centers to broader concerns about job displacement, AI and wealth concentration. At least 75 data center projects valued at roughly $130 billion were blocked or delayed during the first quarter of 2026.

A May Gallup survey found 71% of Americans opposed AI data centers near their communities.

Cuban’s comments come as AI companies face growing scrutiny over safety. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called for caution around frontier AI development, while OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has backed the need to "pace the frontier."

Benzinga Edge Stock Rankings show Meta in an upward trend across the short, medium and long term, with a Growth score in the 79th percentile.
