On Sunday, China’s  ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) said it has begun mass production using a fifth-generation DRAM technology platform.

This marks a potential step forward in Beijing’s effort to build a stronger domestic rival to Samsung Electronics Co. (OTC:SSNLF), SK Hynix (NASDAQ:SKHY) and Micron Technology (NASDAQ:MU).

CXMT Advances DRAM Manufacturing

The new platform aims to produce higher-performance memory chips while reducing manufacturing costs and power consumption, Reuters reported.

CXMT said the technology could provide electronics manufacturers with another source of DRAM for smartphones and other devices.

The Hefei-based company stated it reduced the spacing of key data-storage structures to 11.95 nanometers, using a manufacturing technique known as "quadruple patterning."

"Our process capability" is now comparable to advanced mass-produced technologies in the industry, CXMT Vice President Luo Xiaodong said at the 2026 World Manufacturing Convention in Hefei.

The company said the new platform can produce at least 50% more gross chip dies per wafer than its fourth-generation technology, based on an 8-gigabit chip.

CXMT Unveils New LPDDR5X Memory Chips

CXMT also introduced two 24-gigabit LPDDR5X memory products manufactured using the new platform.

The power-efficient DRAM products are designed primarily for smartphones and other portable electronics and can hold 50% more data than CXMT’s previous equivalent offerings, the company said.

The new chips are already in mass production and come in two package formats for different device designs.

CXMT Eyes NAND Market As Micron, SanDisk Revenue Surges

China’s leading chipmaker reported an 873.64% year-over-year jump in revenue for the first half of 2026. Revenue reached 150.31 billion yuan ($22.4 billion) for the six months ended June.

CXMT is reportedly gearing up to expand into NAND flash memory after securing nearly 10% of global DRAM revenue.

Meanwhile, Micron’s NAND revenue surged 99.2% sequentially to $11.85 billion in the second quarter, while SanDisk Corp. (NASDAQ:SNDK) rose 50.7% to nearly $8.97 billion.
