Butterfly Network Inc (NYSE:BFLY) shares are soaring Tuesday after Needham initiated coverage on the stock with a Buy rating and a $10 price target. Here’s what you should know.

Needham Initiates Coverage With a Buy Rating and $10 Target

Needham analyst David Saxon started coverage of Butterfly Network with a Buy rating, setting a 12-month price target of $10, built on a sum-of-the-parts model that works out to roughly 16 times the firm’s 2027 EV/sales estimate. The Needham analyst pointed to the company’s proprietary chip-based ultrasound technology as the foundation of the bull case, arguing it opens doors into markets well beyond ultrasound’s traditional footprint.

A central piece of that thesis is Butterfly’s Embedded segment, where outside partners license its ultrasound chips to build new categories of medical devices. Needham counts a dozen active partnerships, including a tie-up with Midjourney worth an estimated $300 million by 2030, and a Mendaera product launching later this year worth roughly $25 million over time.

The firm also expects Butterfly’s handheld iQ device to keep disrupting conventional ultrasound by letting clinicians scan the entire body with one probe for less money, with an upgraded version due in early 2027.

Needham also flagged Butterfly’s Garden initiative, where outside developers build applications on Butterfly’s hardware, as another growth lever. Three new Garden apps launching in the back half of 2026 could add roughly 8 percentage points to next year’s growth if adopted by 15% of Butterfly’s domestic customer base, Saxon estimated.

That growth story comes at a steep valuation relative to peers. Shares currently trade at roughly 15.5 times projected 2026 EV/sales, more than triple the 5.1 times median multiple assigned to comparable small- and mid-cap growth names, and approximately seven times the 2.2 times median seen across small- and mid-cap medical supply companies, according to Needham.

Needham Flags Competition and Capital Needs as Key Risks

Needham warned that Butterfly operates in a crowded field dominated by considerably larger rivals such as GE Healthcare, Philips, Siemens Healthineers and United Imaging, companies with deeper pockets and broader product portfolios.

Saxon also cautioned that the Embedded business remains commercially unproven, since none of those partner products have launched yet, leaving roughly two-thirds of Butterfly’s sales tied to its legacy business as of the second quarter of this year. Growth comparisons get tougher from here too, since Butterfly notched its Midjourney win in the fourth quarter of 2025, meaning a lack of fresh deal announcements could slow growth and weigh on the stock’s valuation.

Finally, Needham noted that staying ahead technologically requires ongoing investment in new chip generations, a costly proposition for a company that hasn’t reached profitability yet, though its roadmap targets breakeven free cash flow by 2027.
