Meta Platforms, Inc.’s (NASDAQ:META) Muse AI agent is facing fresh privacy and safety questions after reports emerged of unexpected access to private messages and sensitive user information.
Elon Musk Amplifies Muse Privacy Concerns
On Sunday, Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCX) CEO Elon Musk reposted a post from Gizmodo Senior Editor Ray Wong, who criticized Muse after sharing an account in which the AI agent allegedly provided a Facebook Marketplace seller with a user’s address, resulting in sellers showing up at the person’s home.
Musk heads SpaceX, which offers rival AI services and the Grok chatbot.
Wong called the incident "dangerous and creepy," adding, "This would have been 1000x worse if the person was a woman."
Wong also shared an Inc. report titled "Meta’s New Muse AI Agent Read My Private Messages. I Never Asked It To," raising additional questions about the agent’s access to sensitive information.
Meta Defends Muse’s Privacy Controls
Meta Superintelligence Labs executive David Singleton responded to the Inc. report on Threads, saying the company takes reports of potential security issues seriously.
Singleton said Muse’s Messages integration on Mac is optional and requires users to enable the Messages connector and grant Muse Full Disk Access through macOS.
He noted that users must go through multiple application and system-level permission steps before Muse can access Messages content.
According to Singleton, those protections are designed to prevent Muse from bypassing permissions even if the application itself contains a bug. He also said Full Disk Access can be disabled by users.

Meta did not immediately respond to Benzinga’s request for comment.
Muse AI Agent Can Act On Users’ Behalf
Meta describes Muse as a personal AI agent designed to interact with a user’s digital life. Its capabilities include shopping, accessing connected applications and completing tasks on a user’s behalf.
In an earlier blog post, Meta said the tech giant "built Muse from the ground up to be a safe, secure, private, and widely available personal AI agent."
The backlash also comes at a time when reports about AI agents from OpenAI, Anthropic and Alphabet Inc.’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google going rogue have also heightened concerns.
Price Action: Meta fell 3.33% to $751.66 on Friday, according to Benzinga Pro.
According to Benzinga Edge Stock Rankings, Meta ranks in the 88th percentile for Momentum, with its stock showing positive short-, medium- and long-term price trends.
