Seagate Technology Holdings PLC (NASDAQ:STX) shares are trending on Wednesday.
Shares of the multinational data storage company edged 0.30% higher to $808.08 after the bell on Tuesday.
In the regular session, Seagate stock closed at $805.63, down 9.18%, according to Benzinga Pro data.
The stock saw higher-than-usual trading activity on Tuesday. Trading volume reached 7.28 million shares, roughly 1.8 times its average volume of 3.96 million shares.
Toshiba’s Supply Threat Spooks Investors
The stock move came as investors weighed Toshiba‘s plan to invest about $380 million in its Philippine operations. The investment would nearly double hard disk drive (HDD) capacity for AI data centers by fiscal 2027, according to reports.
Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) argued the HDD market would stay undersupplied through 2028. TD Cowen estimated Toshiba’s expansion could add about 75 exabytes against a roughly 300-exabyte shortage.
Seagate’s HAMR Lead
Seagate is leaning on technology to defend its position. Seagate’s heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) Mozaic platform supports drives up to 44TB, with a path toward 100TB. The company says two leading hyperscalers have qualified it for production-scale deployments, meaning the drives have passed customer testing for large rollouts.
Seagate and Toshiba are also reportedly competing to acquire TDK‘s HDD magnetic-head business in a deal potentially worth several billion dollars. TDK supplies heads to all three major HDD makers, so the winner could gain leverage over the industry’s supply chain. TDK has said it has not made a final decision.
